Keynote Speakers

Shelley F. Martin, Associate Professor of Architecture at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University where she teaches undergraduate and graduate studio and thesis courses in architecture, and is Co-Director of OpenLab Boston, a collaborative fabrication-based research studio course located in Payette Architects office in Boston, and formed in partnership with the VT School of Architecture Center for Design Research. She has developed seminar courses in tactile material practices, production and theory courses in photography and filmmaking, courses in material culture for all majors, and is a Presidential Global Scholar faculty with the Virginia Tech Honors Program. Her scholarship centers on architectural pedagogy and its relationship to material culture and processes of production, and has been presented in numerous venues including University of Oxford, Manchester School of Architecture, Aarhus School of Architecture, Cranbrook Academy of Art, Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, and American Institute of Architects.

Sami Rintala, a Finnish architect, artist, and professor who critically operates at the intersection of teaching and practice. As a principal of to the internationally renowned Rintala Eggertsson Architects, his own work is based on narrative and conceptualism. The resulting work is a layered interpretation of the physical, mental and poetic resources of the site. As a Professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Rintala has forged a pedagogy of some 259 hands-on workshops where students and clients are challenged to participate in the shaping of the human environment in realistic 1:1 situations.
